EASB Foul And Miss Flow Chart

The EASB have recently published a ‘Foul And Miss Flowchart’ which all those who undertake refereeing duties in the league may find useful; a copy has been added to the Rules & Reffing section of the league website, please click here to view (opens in a new window).

Please could a Captain of each Club print off a copy for their Club’s noticeboard for future reference.  It is worth remembering that in applying the Miss Rule in local league snooker that you must always take into account the players handicap and their ability.

Should you have any queries regarding the flowchart then please do not hesitate to contact our League President/Chairman and EASB Director of Referees Dan Lewis via the league email address, swdsl@live.co.uk.

WPBSA Official Rules Of Snooker Updated

All players should be aware that the WPBSA [World Professional Billiards and Snooker Association] have this month updated the Official Rules of Snooker, please click here (opens in a new window) to view the latest Snooker Rule Book dated 12 August 2014 direct from the WPBSA website.

A brief summary of the rule changes is provided below:

Section 2 Rule 6 Stroke. (a)
The addition of “except whilst addressing the cue-ball (known as feathering)”
The act of feathering the cue-ball is not a legal stroke, therefore it is penalised.

Section 2 Rule 13 – Free Ball & Section 3 Rule 12 – Snookered after a Foul
Now to include “other than the ball on”
This is not a rule change, but just a clarification of an existing rule. Following several incidents regarding the awarding of a Free Ball following a Foul, it should be clearly understood that the ball on can never be considered to be the Free Ball.

Section 2 Rule 14 – Forced off the table
The amended Rule will state as follows with the new part underlined:
“A ball is forced off the table if it comes to rest other than on the bed of the table or in a pocket, or is picked up by the striker, or intentionally moved by hand whilst it is in play”
This change was made to clarify the instance of a ball being lifted from the bed of the table or rolled into a new position. Both instances are fouls, but the cue-ball is now in hand for either offence.

Section 3 Rule 10 – Penalties
The position of the push shot penalty has changed it’s position, from (b)(v) to (a)(x).
Also, (d) (iii) Now reads “touches any ball during consultation”.
The touching of any ball during the consultation of replacing the balls following a Foul and a Miss, will now incur a penalty of SEVEN points.

Section 3 Rule 14 – Foul and a Miss.
The Foul and a Miss Rule was found to be too complicated, so needed to be simplified. This Rule has not changed in essence, but has been condensed into a shorter format, due to this, many cross references have had to be amended.

Section 3 Rule 15 Ball Moved by Other than Striker
(a) Remove the words “other than the strikers partner” If the strikers partner moves a ball, this is now a foul.

In accordance with league rules, please remember that all clubs must display a copy of the current SWDSL League Constitution, General Rules and Handicaps Document.  If all Captains could take the lead in ensuring that a copy is displayed it would be appreciated and help to alleviate any rule queries on match nights.

2014/15 League Season – Fixtures

The 2014/15 League Season Fixtures for both the Three Player Division and Four Player Division are now available to view/download/print from the league website.  Please could all players note that the Three Player Division will commence on Monday 1 September 2014 with the Four Player Division commencing a week later on Monday 8 September 2014.

Please could all team captains double check that their own home night is correct and report any issues to the Fixtures/Results Secretary Cathy O’Neill via the league email address swdsl@live.co.uk so these can be dealt with quickly, ideally before the start of the season.

In the Three Player Division we have grown from the 14 teams last season to 15 teams competing in the 2014/15 league season and we have also gained 2 new league venues, Stansted Social Club and Birchanger Sports & Social Club.  BSSC B have moved to Birchanger and Sawbo USC Bandits have moved to Stansted and have also formed a second team called the Stansted Social Highwaymen.  This means however we have lost Sawbridgeworth United Services Club as a league venue.  We have also lost the RBL Tornados but we hope that some of their players will
rejoin the league again at some point in the future.  The four player teams of Saffron Snooker Ex Cons and Saffron Snooker Flukes have joined forces to form a new three player team called the Saffron Snooker Flukiers.

In the Four Player Division we have once again 8 teams competing, with Newport C reforming taking on some of Newport Granta’s players, and Newport Ex Cons moving to
Saffron Snooker Club as Saffron Snooker Ex Cons.

It is very encouraging to see this season that we have a record number of new players signing up to play in the league, several old faces returning again such as Sue Parrish and Oliver Pettit,
and ex-professional snooker players Jason Pegrum and Graham Driver mixing it up with the high minus players.

The Player Handicaps list is currently being finalised and will be available soon.

Fundraising to buy a GigerMD machine for the MSA Trust

A very good friend of mine Andrew Hulkes has in the past 12 months been diagnosed with MSA or Multiple System Atrophy. Here is his story and a link to his JustGiving Page. His fundraising so far has reached nearly £14,000 (as at 30 June 2014). Anything you could spare as a donation would be gratefully received not just by the MSA Trust and Andrew, but by the many other people who will benefit from the use of this machine in the future. This will benefit the people of Essex. Please pass this on to as many people as you can, if everyone donates just £1 I’m sure we can soon reach the magic target and start helping Andrew and others. Thank you, Peter.

Andrew’s Story
I am asking for your help to raise £25,000 that being the cost of buying, importing and installing a GigerMD in the UK and training staff to operate it. You don’t have to promise all of that yourself of course, but anything, anything at all that you can give would make a tremendous difference not only to me, but to anybody who has a neurological condition of any sort. And that’s an awful lot of people who would be immensely grateful to you.

I have developed a rare medical condition known as MSA – a neurodegenerative disease that medical science can’t yet cure, treat or even slow down. Basically, MSA just munches away at one’s nervous system until there is nothing left to munch. At which point, you lose. I have had symptoms for several years but have now reached the point where working is no longer feasible.

While medical science can’t cure MSA, the GigerMD machine helps the body to reassign healthy nerve tissue to replace tissues damaged or destroyed by accident or disease. It’s not a cure, because eventually the body runs out of healthy nerve tissue to convert, but it is a way of making the very best use of what one has. Stoke Mandeville Hospital have one of the only machines in the public domain in the UK, and their Clinical Director recently wrote to me to say: “we find the GIGER to be an extremely useful part of the ongoing maintenance for health for people with neurological disability.”

I mentioned the GigerMD to Benfleet Physiotherapy, the neuro-physiotherapy practice that I attend and they, having consulted with numerous senior practitioners, were very enthusiastic about the device. So much so they agreed that if we could raise the money to buy one, they would locate it within their practice and not only offer therapy to MSA sufferers free of charge, but also provide rehabilitation services to anyone suffering with a neurological condition.

Quite apart from the treatment angle, there is also the possibility that the data obtained from treatment would have a value in MSA research, an area that needs much more support.

This is probably the most cost effective project I’ve ever been involved with. We can make a real difference to the lives of people who, up until now, have only been told there’s nothing that can be done for them. That’s got be worthwhile.

Thank you,
Andrew Hulkes
