Miss Rule Clarification – Snookers Required

Following a recent Miss Rule debate at Saffron Snooker Club during a league match, please find below an extract from the current World Snooker Rules which gives clarification of calling a ‘foul and a miss’.  A miss shall not be called where as a result of the foul being committed the player then requires snookers, or already requires snookers prior to committing the foul.

14. Foul and a Miss
(a) The striker shall, to the best of his ability, endeavour to hit the ball on or a
ball that could be on after a Red has been potted. If the referee considers
the Rule infringed, he shall call FOUL AND A MISS unless:
(i) any player needed penalty points before, or as a result of, the stroke
being played;
(ii) before or after the stroke, the points available on the table are equal
to the points difference excluding the value of the re-spotted black;
and the referee is satisfied that the miss was not intentional.
(iii) a situation exists where it is impossible to hit the ball on.

In addition, please could all players also remember this important part of the snooker etiquette during all league matches;

As a player taking part in the match but not in a particular frame, or as a watching spectator ;
– do not offer shot advice (coaching) during a frame to either player
do not get involved with refereeing decisions/scoring mishaps unless your advice is requested by the referee

Harrow & District Inter-League And Champion Of Champions Tournament

The DMC Leisure Saffron Walden & District Snooker League are pleased to announce that we have been invited to participate in the Harrow & District Snooker League Annual Inter-League Tournament, and the Champion Of Champions Tournament.

Inter-League Tournament
The Inter-League Tournament comprises of 9 district snooker leagues playing in a straight knock out draw.  This year the leagues taking part are Harrow, Saffron Walden, Watford, Reading, South Beds, North London, Thames Valley, Welwyn Garden City and Milton Keynes.

Saffron Walden’s match in the 1st Round is away to Welwyn Garden City [Goffs Oak Comrades Club – 5.30pm start] on Sunday 23 November 2014.  Each team comprises of 6 players [ranked 1 to 6] who each play 2 frames against their opposite number.

For those that may wish to come along and support the Saffron Walden team, please contact Adam Ingram as several cars will be travelling and lifts may be able to be shared.

The six players selected to represent our league are;
Adam Ingram [captain], Jonathan Wells, Russell Huxter, Graham Driver, Stuart Turner and Michael Cushion.

Champion Of Champions Tournament
The competition shall take the form of a one-day snooker tournament hosted by a different League each year.  Subject to the number of participants on the day, the first round will take the form of a “round robin” of four groups of players, each match consisting of the best of 5 frames. The knockout semi-finals, comprising the winner of each group, will be played over the best
of 5 frames and the final over the best of 7 frames.
Players will toss for choice of break in the first frame of each match and then will break alternately.  The organising League shall supply referees (possibly asking other participating Leagues for assistance).  The organising League may have to make appropriate adjustments to the first round (perhaps even dispensing with the round robin format) if insufficient players attend on the day.  Adam Ingram has been selected by the Committee to represent our league in this tournament.

A copy of the drawsheet, rules for both tournaments and contact list can be found in the Tournaments section in the menu at the top of the website.

Memorial Cup Tournament – Sunday 30 November 2014
Following the recent passing of John Webb, this season’s Memorial Cup brings to the forefront of the ethos of this tournament, to remember all those league players who are sadly no longer with us.  The Committee have approved a new format which will be entry limited to 32 players and be played in the format of round robin singles in 4 groups of 8 players, with each player playing 1 frame against each other in their group.  All matches including the knock out stages will be played off of league handicaps and time limited to 30 minutes per frame.  The entry fee will be £10.00 which includes your table light all day, with the winner and runner up of each group will go through to the 1 frame quarter finals knock out stage.  The semi finals will also be 1 frame, with the final best-of-three frames.

The chosen charity that the league is supporting this year is Diabetes UK, and all monies raised from the raffle and auction will be donated to this worthy cause.  As is the norm, there will be some excellent raffle prizes, and any donations from either league members or clubs will be gratefully received.  Please bring them along on the day, drop them into Saffron Snooker Club in advance or hand to any member of the Committee.  An auction will also be held for a pair of tickets to an afternoon/evening session at the Master Snooker Tournament in January 2015.

Due to the tournament being limited to 32 entrants and to avoid disappointment on the day with the event being potentially oversubscribed, you can secure your place in advance by paying the entry fee either via online banking payment to the league bank account, or via secure paypal / debit card / credit card payment by clicking the Buy Now button below.  Please use your name as the payment reference.  You can also pay cash prior to the day to either the Tournament Secretary Adam Ingram or League Treasurer Peter Saville.  Please remember all entries are only secured once payment has been received.  A list of entrants will be added to the website as entries are received.

Don’t miss out, click the logo to reserve your place now…!    Buy Now Button with Credit Cards

2014/15 League Season – REMINDER – Reporting Match Results

With the Three Player Division commencing this week and the Four Player Division commencing next week, please could all Captains remember the rule change voted in at the AGM in June.

Amendment to Rule 10 – ADD ‘One point shall be deducted from the Home team’s accrued points total to date should the league not be notified of a league match result within 48 hours of the match taking place. Notification shall be made via text message to Adam Ingram/Cathy O’Neill, email to swdsl@live.co.uk or the website results form.’

This rule has been brought in as last season several home team captains were persistently late in letting us know their match results which meant that the league tables could not be updated on a regular basis.
