Super Spike Wins The 2016 Memorial Cup!

The DMC Leisure Saffron Walden and District Snooker League Annual Memorial Cup event was hosted at Saffron Snooker Club on Sunday 27 November 2016.  The tournament remembers all players that have contributed to the league over its history, whom are sadly no longer with us.

The tournament comprised of a field of 20 league players split into two groups of 10.  Single frame round robin handicapped format with a 30 minute time limit per frame.  The two highest placed finishers from each group progressed to the knock out semi finals.

The group stages played out with many expected close frames however some players failed to produce their normal form.  Subsequently a high tally of frames was required to progress to the semi finals.  Three players from Group A (Andy Marshall, Aaron Gibson and Richard Malyon) and two players from Group B (Spike Braybrooke and Rob Spackman) all played well and won 7 from 9 frames.  Unfortunately on count back Richard Malyon having lost to both Andy and Aaron did not progress to the Semi finals.  Head to head results also decided the group winners and runners up positions.

Group A – Winner: Andy Marshall, Runner Up: Aaron Gibson

Group B – Winner: Spike Braybrooke, Runner Up: Rob Spackman

SF1: Andy Marshall 1-0 Rob Spackman

SF2: Spike Braybrooke 1-0 Aaron Gibson

After well composed performances the two progressing players Andy Marshall and Spike Braybrooke would now contest a best of three match in a repeat of the 2015 final.

Final: Andy Marshall 1-2 Spike Braybrooke

Defending champion Andy Marshall struck first winning frame one. Spike Braybrooke however continuing to play valiantly levelled the match.  The all important final frame saw a few nervy shots from both players; however Andy Marshall failed to make the most of his chances, enabling Braybooke to establish a commanding point’s lead to claim the 2016 Memorial Cup.

The tournament high break was well contested between Adam Ingram and an on form Rob Spackman.  Adam’s highest a well worked 71 was bettered by a fantastic 88 from Rob Spackman.

2016 Memorial Cup Winner – Spike Braybrooke

Runner-Up – Andy Marshall

High break – Rob Spackman (88)

Fundraising for The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation

You may have seen it in the news last week, the tragic story of a 24 year old footballer collapsing playing the sport he loved and sadly passing away.  He left behind a loving family who are devastated and shocked at his passing. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/37367137

On Monday 12th September 2016 Dan was playing for Shaw Lane AFC in a cup tie at Brighouse Town FC when he suddenly collapsed, despite heroic efforts by medical staff from both teams along with paramedics, they were unable to save Dan.  He had an underlying heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopath (AVRC), this is the same disease that caused former footballer Fabrice Muamba to retire in 2012 when he collapsed playing at Tottenham.   This is an inherited condition that causes the replacement of cardiac muscle with fibrous, fatty tissue, normally in the right side of the heart, it causes the walls in the heart chamber to become thin and stretched, impacting how the blood is pumped around the body causing abnormal heart rhythms.

The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation has been set up to raise funds to save young sportsmen’s lives!  The foundation is supported by the FA and county FA’s, with every penny going towards screenings for footballers at all grass roots levels.  Money will also be provided to assist clubs in purchasing Defibrillators and providing training in CPR.

Below is a link to the justgiving crowdfunding page that has been set up if you would like to donate to this worthy cause.

New League Venue: JP’s Snooker Club

The Committee of the DMC Leisure Saffron Walden & District Snooker Club are pleased to welcome JP’s Snooker Club to our league as a new league venue for the 2016/17 league season.

Following the closure of The Stow Snooker Club, our reigning Scratch Singles champion Jason Pegram took on the task of breathing a breath of fresh air into a run-down and tired old building and having completely gutted it, has transformed it into a new, modern and family friendly venue for snooker with 5 full sized tables.  The grand opening of JP’s is on Saturday 10th September 2016 and is being opened by none other than the 6 times World Champion Steve ‘The Nugget’ Davis [ticket only event].

The jewel in the crown of JP’s is a superb match table which was used at the World Snooker Championships final in 2009 when John Higgins beat Shaun Murphy 18-9.  By the end of the year, the club will also have several pool tables on the floor above and a poker room with regular tournaments being run.  Parking is available via an adjacent ‘Pay and Display’ car park which is free in the evenings.

We wish Jason and all those involved with JP’s every success for the future!

The address of the club is;

2016/17 League Season – Reporting Of League Match Results

With both the Three Player and Four Player Divisions commencing next week, please could all Captains remember that league match results must be reported in a timely fashion in accordance with league rules.

Rule 10 – ‘One point shall be deducted from the Home team’s accrued points total to date should the league not be notified of a league match result within 48 hours of the match taking place. Notification shall be made via text message to Cathy O’Neill, email to swdsl@live.co.uk or the website Results Form.’

This rule was brought in as several home team captains were persistently late in letting us know their match results which meant that the league tables could not be updated on a regular basis.

For the new season to assist with the reporting of results and handicaps, we have now set up a WhatsApp group, so if someone at the match could also take a photo of the results card and send it to the group we can keep the handicaps macro up to date also.  It also helps as a record if the original results card goes missing!  If you aren’t already added to the group please message either Cathy O’Neill or Peter Saville and we will add you to it.

Please note that league match results no longer need to be sent to Adam Ingram as Cathy will now be compiling the league tables each week.
