SWDSL Retain 2017 Bishop’s Stortford Challenge Title

The annual Bishop’s Stortford Challenge, sponsored by Carriage’s of Eden End Ltd took place at the JP’s Snooker & Pool Club at The Stow in Old Harlow on Sunday 2 April 2017.  The team singles event contested between the Bishop’s Stortford & District Snooker League and the DMC Leisure Saffron Walden and District Snooker league was represented by five league players each comprising of players handicapped between -10 and +10.

After a great day of snooker enjoyed by all, the Saffron Walden team played a solid final round winning 7 of the 10 frames to win the tournament by 31 frames to 19 and complete a hat trick of wins on the spin having won the event in both 2015 and 2016.

Saffron Walden team & frames won:
Peter Saville                7/10
Aaron Gibson              7/10
Bob Burling                 6/10
Kevin Starr (Capt)       6/10
Andy Marshall            5/10

Peter Saville and Aaron Gibson shared the honour of the ‘Player of the Tournament’ Award with both winning 7 out of 10 frames. Aaron also won the ‘High Break’ Award with a 31 after both himself and Peter Saville had both knocked in 30 breaks early in the tournament.

The Committee of the SWDSL would like to thank JP’s Snooker & Pool Club for providing the venue and food for this event, our sponsor Carriage’s of Eden End Ltd, SWDSL Tournament Secretary Adam Ingram for running the tournament, the players who represented the Saffron Walden league and finally the Bishop’s Stortford & District Snooker League who played their part in a spirited and competitive tournament.

League Tournaments – Can’t Make The Semi-Final Or Final? Then Withdraw Now!

As per previous seasons. the Tournament Secretary respectfully requests that all players that are still in the Quarter Finals of either the Handicap Singles, Handicap Doubles, John Webb Plate, Scratch Plus Singles and Scratch Singles to check the Season Calendar to ensure that they are available to play on the dates listed for the semi-finals or final for that tournament.  Tournament dates are set in stone and will not be changed if you cannot make it – whatever your reason may be.

If you are not available then please do not play your Quarter Final match – inform the Tournament Secretary and you will be withdrawn from the tournament.

It is not fair on your opponent to play a Quarter Final match and win knowing that you cannot make either the semi-final or final.  Any players doing so will be banned from entering next season.

Quarter Finals Round – All Tournaments

The drawsheets for the Quarter Finals Round of the Handicap Singles, Handicap Doubles, Scratch Singles, Scratch Plus Singles and John Webb Plate are now updated on the league website.  Please note that all matches are to be arranged by 14 March 2017 and played by 28 March 2017.

Please could the winner of each match report the result to the Tournament Secretary Adam Ingram within 24 hours to enable the tournament drawsheet to be updated for the next round.

Should you encounter any issues in trying to contact your opponent then please contact the Tournament Secretary Adam Ingram on 07901-723360.

BSRBL Rogues – Withdrawal From Three Player Division

Following two incidents that occurred during a League Cup Match between the Bishop’s Stortford Royal British Legion Rogues and the Saffron Snooker Flukes at Saffron Snooker Club on Wednesday 12 January 2017, unfortunately the Rogues have decided to withdraw from the Three Player Division with immediate effect.

An Emergency Committee Meeting was held on Sunday 15 January 2017 to discuss the incidents that took place and having reviewed the evidence in detail from witnesses present on the night and written statements from those involved, the Committee unanimously agreed to give life time bans to Kevin O’Neill and Nicholas Griggs from any further involvement with the DMC Leisure Saffron Walden & District Snooker League.  The remaining registered players are more than welcome to register for new teams and continue playing for the rest of the season.  Please could their new Captains inform us via the New Player Registration Form on the website.

As a result of the Rogues withdrawal from the Three Player Division, all of their first half league results have now been expunged and taken off of the league table.  The fixtures have also been updated to include an extra free week for all teams.  Due to the fact that league cup, league and tournament matches have since taken place using the second half handicaps, these will not be altered to reflect the matches expunged.

Should any league members wish to discuss the above further, then please do not hesitate to contact either the Chairman, Dan Lewis, or the League Secretary, Simon Chapman.

**New Postal Address For League/Cup Match Results Cards**

As many of you are by now aware the Royal British Legion Club in Bishop’s Stortford has been earmarked for closure sometime during 2017 and as a consequence our Fixtures/Results Secretary Cathy O’Neill has joined a new RBL Club near Ely.  We all wish her every success in her new venture.

Accordingly, please could all Captains and Vice Captains that usually post their League Results Cards to her please ensure that with immediate effect that they are posted to Cathy’s new address which has been emailed to all team Captains.  If at any time you need a reminder then please contact us.

With the age of technology that we are currently in, results cards can instead of being posted be scanned and emailed to swdsl@live.co.uk or photographed on a smartphone and posted to the WhatsApp Group.  This is easier to do and saves you a postage stamp!

With Cathy moving out of the area she has advised us that she will be stepping down from the Committee at the end of the season and has kindly offered to continue working remotely until the end of the current league season for which we are very grateful for.  Cathy has done a fantastic job since she took over from Tony Webber in 2011 and we cannot thank her enough for all her hard work.  Without a Fixtures/Results Secretary the league ceases to function so we are pleased to announce that Trevor Parsons has volunteered to take up the reigns for next season and will be shadowing Cathy over the next months to ensure a smooth transition.

Should you have any queries regarding the above then please do not hesitate to contact either Cathy or Peter Saville.

Last 32 Round – Scratch Plus Singles

The drawsheet for the Last 32 Round of the Scratch Plus Singles is now uploaded to the league website.  Please note that all matches are to be arranged by 14 January 2017 and played by 28 January 2017.

Last 128 Round / Last 64 – Handicap Singles and Last 64 – Handicap Doubles

The drawsheets for the Last 128/64 Rounds of the Handicap Singles and the Last 64 Round of the Handicap Doubles are now on the league website.  Please note that all matches are to be arranged by 14 October 2016 and played by 28 October 2016.

Player contact numbers are listed on the Registered Players Contact List.
This list is password protected and has been updated in line with previous seasons….if you need a reminder then please email swdsl@live.co.uk or text Adam Ingram on 07901-723360.

Please could the winner of each match report the result to the Tournament Secretary Adam Ingram within 24 hours to enable the tournament drawsheets to be updated for the next round.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our two tournament sponsors, Mullucks Wells and The Fleur De Lys at Widdington.

Fundraising for The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation

You may have seen it in the news last week, the tragic story of a 24 year old footballer collapsing playing the sport he loved and sadly passing away.  He left behind a loving family who are devastated and shocked at his passing. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/37367137

On Monday 12th September 2016 Dan was playing for Shaw Lane AFC in a cup tie at Brighouse Town FC when he suddenly collapsed, despite heroic efforts by medical staff from both teams along with paramedics, they were unable to save Dan.  He had an underlying heart condition called Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopath (AVRC), this is the same disease that caused former footballer Fabrice Muamba to retire in 2012 when he collapsed playing at Tottenham.   This is an inherited condition that causes the replacement of cardiac muscle with fibrous, fatty tissue, normally in the right side of the heart, it causes the walls in the heart chamber to become thin and stretched, impacting how the blood is pumped around the body causing abnormal heart rhythms.

The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation has been set up to raise funds to save young sportsmen’s lives!  The foundation is supported by the FA and county FA’s, with every penny going towards screenings for footballers at all grass roots levels.  Money will also be provided to assist clubs in purchasing Defibrillators and providing training in CPR.

Below is a link to the justgiving crowdfunding page that has been set up if you would like to donate to this worthy cause.
