Fundraising to buy a GigerMD machine for the MSA Trust

A very good friend of mine Andrew Hulkes has in the past 12 months been diagnosed with MSA or Multiple System Atrophy. Here is his story and a link to his JustGiving Page. His fundraising so far has reached nearly £14,000 (as at 30 June 2014). Anything you could spare as a donation would be gratefully received not just by the MSA Trust and Andrew, but by the many other people who will benefit from the use of this machine in the future. This will benefit the people of Essex. Please pass this on to as many people as you can, if everyone donates just £1 I’m sure we can soon reach the magic target and start helping Andrew and others. Thank you, Peter.

Andrew’s Story
I am asking for your help to raise £25,000 that being the cost of buying, importing and installing a GigerMD in the UK and training staff to operate it. You don’t have to promise all of that yourself of course, but anything, anything at all that you can give would make a tremendous difference not only to me, but to anybody who has a neurological condition of any sort. And that’s an awful lot of people who would be immensely grateful to you.

I have developed a rare medical condition known as MSA – a neurodegenerative disease that medical science can’t yet cure, treat or even slow down. Basically, MSA just munches away at one’s nervous system until there is nothing left to munch. At which point, you lose. I have had symptoms for several years but have now reached the point where working is no longer feasible.

While medical science can’t cure MSA, the GigerMD machine helps the body to reassign healthy nerve tissue to replace tissues damaged or destroyed by accident or disease. It’s not a cure, because eventually the body runs out of healthy nerve tissue to convert, but it is a way of making the very best use of what one has. Stoke Mandeville Hospital have one of the only machines in the public domain in the UK, and their Clinical Director recently wrote to me to say: “we find the GIGER to be an extremely useful part of the ongoing maintenance for health for people with neurological disability.”

I mentioned the GigerMD to Benfleet Physiotherapy, the neuro-physiotherapy practice that I attend and they, having consulted with numerous senior practitioners, were very enthusiastic about the device. So much so they agreed that if we could raise the money to buy one, they would locate it within their practice and not only offer therapy to MSA sufferers free of charge, but also provide rehabilitation services to anyone suffering with a neurological condition.

Quite apart from the treatment angle, there is also the possibility that the data obtained from treatment would have a value in MSA research, an area that needs much more support.

This is probably the most cost effective project I’ve ever been involved with. We can make a real difference to the lives of people who, up until now, have only been told there’s nothing that can be done for them. That’s got be worthwhile.

Thank you,
Andrew Hulkes

Singles Tournament Success For Wells, Parradine and Selvey!

Saturday 17 May 2014 saw the remaining three Singles finals being played out to a conclusion at Saffron Snooker Club, below is a brief report on each final.

Scratch Plus Singles Final – Nick Selvey v Andy Webb
In the afternoon Nick Selvey and Andy Webb locked horns in the Scratch Plus Singles final and the match was nip-and-tuck all the way through with Selvey initially going 1-0 up [59-15], only to lose the next two frames [52-62, 19-34] to go 2-1 down.  Selvey dug deep to level the match at 2-2 [59-46] in a close frame, and managed to continue momentum to also win the final frame 78-51 and the match 3-2 overall.  Congratulations to Nick in what has been an up-and-down season for him, and commiserations to Andy who by contrast has had an excellent run of form this year and knocked in the joint highest break of 46 in the tournament.
Dan Lewis officiated.

Handicap Singles Final – Steve Parradine v Joe Fanthorpe
With neither player not known for their quick style of play, this match was always going to keep the table light on for a couple of hours!  Joe ‘raced’ into an early lead after the opening frame took around one hour to take the frame [71-49], and Steve ‘quickly’ replied after the second hour had passed to level at 1-1 [67-46].  After a brief comfort/buffet break, the match resumed and Steve ground out frame three 68-55.  With his nose in front, momentum seemed to swing his way and Steve secured victory 74-40 in frame four to win the match 3-1 after around four hours of play and to take the Handicap Singles title.  Both players showed incredible stamina and the match was played with a lot of grit and determination.  Congratulations to Steve who has had his best ever season in the league and richly deserves his ‘Three Player Division – Player of the Year’ Award.  Commiserations to Joe who had a fantastic second half in the league and won the President’s Cup plate.
Mark Cooper refereed and Stewart Hart scored the match.

Scratch Singles Final – Jonathan Wells v Darren Edmonston
Given the form both players have shown in the second half of the season and commencing at 6.30pm in a best-of-seven final, many had thought that by 9pm we would have a winner…however for the first time in league history the Scratch Final went the distance not only in frames, time (4 hours), but right down to the final black!

With both players struggling to find their form, frames were traded all the way through the match.  Darren took the first frame after a lengthy safety exchange [71-37, breaks DE28] and Jonathan levelled at 1-1 [69-41, breaks JW32, DE30].  Jonathan then took the lead in the match 2-1 [58-37] and the players took a 15 minute comfort/buffet break to collect their thoughts.

On the re-start, an in-off on the black by Darren forced a re-spotted black which he coolly potted to take the frame [72-65, breaks JW46, DE25].  Darren continued the momentum winning the next [63-23] to lead 3-2 and one frame away from victory, but a nicely constructed break of 52 by Jonathan once again levelled the match at 3-3 [78-6, breaks JW52].

With a final frame decider in play Darren again seized the initiative but in going down to the colours and trailing after potting the blue, Jonathan need pink and black for victory.  In potting the pink, Jonathan tried to move the black off the side cushion but narrowly missed it and instead attempted a double to the corner pocket which came very close.  Further attempts by both Darren and Jonathan eventually ended with Jonathan dispatching a mid range black into the corner pocket for a deserved 4-3 victory.  On the night both players didn’t play at their best by any stretch of the imagination and it was one of those matches apart from the final ball there was nothing to separate the two players.  Congratulations to Jonathan in winning the Scratch Singles title once again, the last time being in 2004/05.  Darren is also a former winner from the 2008/09 season.
Dan Lewis officiated.

The DMC Leisure Saffron Walden & District Snooker League would like to thank Saffron Snooker Club for providing the tables for these finals, and to Dan Lewis, Mark Cooper and Stewart Hart for their officiating duties.

League Cup – Semi Final Round [to be played w/c Monday 5 May 2014]

The draw for the League Cup Semi Finals is detailed below, all spectators are welcome to come along and watch these matches unfold. The format remains as previous rounds, 4 players playing 1 frame each and if it is 2-2 after the 4 frames, then each team captain nominates one of their players to play a sudden death play off frame for a place in the final.

As these matches are being played at a neutral venue, no team has home advantage or the advantage of choosing who plays who, so at the start of the match, each team should write down their order 1,2,3,4 on a separate piece of paper and then turn them over and the referee should then write out the match card.

Tuesday 6 May 2014 – Saffron Flukes 0-3 Dunmow Club at Whittlesford Club

Wednesday 7 May 2014 – Saffron Cavaliers 3-1 BSSC B at Takeley Social Club

REMINDER DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS – SUNDAY 4 MAY 2014 : 2013/14 League Season – Player Of The Season / Achievement Award

Player Of The Year / Achievement Award Nominations

The Committee invite all league members to nominate a player for the following annual awards which will be handed out at Trophy Presentation / Finals Evening on Saturday 17 May 2014.
1.  Three Player Division Player Of The Season
2.  Four Player Division Player Of The Season
3.  Achievement Award (can be a player or team)

Please email swdsl@live.co.uk with your nominations and a brief reasoning as to your choice i.e. as per previous seasons;

a nomination for the Player Of The Season will probably reflect a player who has a either a high or consistent win ratio in league matches during the season, and/or reached the quarter finals stage or beyond in the league tournaments which may include the one day tournaments.

a nomination for the Achievement Award is for an outstanding snooker achievement by a individual player or team during the season either in one frame or over a period of time, ie a player may win 10 straight frames in a row or may have knocked in his/her highest league break etc.

All entries received by the Committee will be considered on their individual merit prior to a final decision being made.  p.s. you cannot vote for yourself!

All entries must be received no later than Sunday 4 May 2014.

Many thanks.

BSSC B Win Play Off To (finally!) Secure The Three Player Division Title

The Three Player Division Title Play Off match was held at Newport Club last night and saw BSSC B and Dunmow Club going head-to-head one final time.  Having finished the league on the same amount of  frames won, same amount of matches won and 3-3 and 3-3 in both of their respective home and away league matches they could not be separated.

In the play off, Dunmow Club quickly found themselves 2-0 down, but brought it back to 2-2 through shear determination.  Akin to his pool playing days, Steve Parradine won frame 5 on the black with a back double on the pink and treble across the table on the black to put BSSC 3-2 up.  With the final frame commencing well after last orders, Craig Houston maintained the excellent form he has shown all season by winning both frames on the night to close out a 4-2 victory and (finally!) secure the title for his team.

Congratulations to BSSC B in winning the Three Player Division title as a new team and being top of the league table all season, and to Dunmow Club in finishing as Runners Up.  Dunmow Club were in 7th place in the league table and 14 points behind BSSC B at the end of January and showed amazing second half form to come back to even put up a title challenge.

The Committee would like to thank Newport Club and Darren Pinnock for providing the venue (and staying open till midnight!), and Committee Member Stewart Hart for refereeing and scoring all 6 frames.
